NYPD School Crossing Guards Help Keep New York City Children Safe: From Early Morning to Afternoon, They Guide Students With Care, Discipline and Dedication
By Uttom Kumer Shaha, Progga News Desk:
NEW YORK — Every school day, thousands of children across New York City travel to and from school along some of the city’s busiest streets. Helping them cross safely and maintaining a secure environment around school crossings are NYPD School Crossing Guards, commonly known as SCGs.
Stationed at busy intersections near schools, School Crossing Guards assist children as they cross streets, help manage pedestrian movement and work to maintain a safe environment during the morning arrival and afternoon dismissal periods.
One of those dedicated crossing guards is Sofia, who has been serving in the position for several months, including May, June and July, and continuing into September 2026.
Sofia said she enjoys the work, particularly because it gives her an opportunity to interact with children and help them get to and from school safely.
Her workday begins at 7 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m., with scheduled breaks during the day. She works five days a week as part of her regular assignment.
The job also involves staying informed about daily conditions, following instructions and maintaining communication with supervisors and other responsible personnel. School Crossing Guards are expected to follow established procedures and safety guidelines while performing their duties.
Sofia said her primary responsibility as a School Crossing Guard is to help ensure the safety of children and pedestrians around school crossings. She also follows the rules and requirements associated with working with the NYPD and uses the equipment and work-related materials provided for her assignment.
In a city as busy and densely populated as New York, the safety of children during school arrival and dismissal is a critical responsibility. School Crossing Guards play an important role not only in helping students cross the street, but also in creating a safer environment for children, parents, school personnel, drivers and pedestrians.
The daily work of crossing guards requires alertness, discipline, patience and a genuine commitment to serving the community. For Sofia and others in the role, helping children safely navigate New York City streets is more than simply standing at a busy intersection—it is a responsibility that directly touches the lives of families every school day.
