Zohran Mamdani's historic victory in New York City's Democratic primary; Andrew Cuomo concedes defeat

Progga News Desk, NY, USA:

In a stunning political upset, State Assembly Member and progressive rising star Zohran Mamdani has won the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo by an 8-point margin, according to 95% of the votes counted. Mamdani secured 44%, while Cuomo trailed with 36%.

Just 90 minutes after polls closed, Cuomo conceded the race, stating, “Tonight belongs to Mamdani — he has rightfully earned this victory.”

At 33 years old, Mamdani’s victory marks more than just a primary win — it signals a generational and ideological shift in New York City politics. As the Democratic Party’s nominee, he now heads into the November 4 general election as the clear favorite, given the city’s overwhelmingly Democratic voter base.

The race drew sharp ideological lines. Cuomo, 67, a centrist known for appointing Republicans during his governorship, represented the party’s moderate wing. Mamdani, by contrast, is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and has long championed the rights of working-class, immigrant, and marginalized communities.

If elected in November, Mamdani would become the first Asian-American mayor in New York City’s history — a landmark achievement in one of the world’s most diverse metropolises. Source: Abir Alamgir | Photo: FB
