South Richmond Hill Dedicates ‘Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg’ — A Historic Tribute Led by Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar
Progga News Desk:
South Richmond Hill witnessed a historic moment as community leaders, elected officials, and members of the Sikh community gathered to honor Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the 9th Guru of the Sikhs, by naming a street after him — “Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg.” His sacrifice in defense of religious freedom is regarded as one of the greatest acts of courage in world history.
At the heart of this landmark dedication was New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar, whose leadership and commitment were instrumental in making the street renaming a reality. Serving as the chief guest at the ceremony held at the 114th Sikh Temple, Assemblywoman Rajkumar formally presented the newly designed street-name sign, “Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg,” to the temple authorities. Following the presentation, the sign was ceremonially installed on the designated street in South Richmond Hill.
Assemblywoman Rajkumar emphasized that Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s legacy is not limited to Sikh history alone, but stands as a universal symbol of humanity’s fight for freedom of faith. She noted, “Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji gave his life so that others could practice their religion without fear. New York honors that extraordinary courage today.”
Council Member Lynn Schulman and several community leaders also played pivotal roles in bringing this initiative to fruition. They joined alongside the Sikh community to celebrate this moment of pride, unity, and historical recognition.
For the Sikh community of New York, the naming of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg stands as a lasting tribute to a saint-warrior whose message of justice, tolerance, and human rights continues to inspire generations. The dedication further reflects the rich multicultural fabric of New York City and its unwavering commitment to protecting religious freedom for all.
